Foxleigh Mine – Cockatoo Creek Diversion & Levee
Our Client (Middlemount South) required the construction of a 4.13km diversion of Cockatoo Creek and a 5.63km long certified engineered levee to protect the mine from flood waters. The client also required the realignment of Barwon Park Road to allow the mine to commence mining operations behind the newly constructed flood levee.
This project comprised the establishment of site facilities, site preparation, bulk earthworks, drainage, concrete work, pavements and road furniture required to construct the Cockatoo Creek Diversion, Flood Levee and realignment of Barwon Park Road to facilitate the expansion of the mine pit to the east.
The project scope of works;
- Development of comprehensive Construction Material Management Plan (including mass haul) and detailed geotechnical testing and analysis of insitu material in the excavation location
- Extensive quality assurance management including engagement and management of on-site NATA geotechnical laboratory (1,100+ compaction tests & 300+ quality tests)
- Clearing and Grubbing of the site (160 Hectares)
- Topsoil strip and stockpile (400,000m3)
- Excavation of key trench for flood levee
- Ground surface treatment for flood levee footprint & road realignment (295,000m2)
- Bulk Excavation and staging of the Cockatoo Creek Diversion (1.1 Million m3) as per the Construction Material Management Plan and Mass Haul
- Zoned embankment fill placement for flood levee & road realignment (700,000m3) including moisture conditioning and placement of this material within tight moisture tolerances
- Rock Mulch Slope Protection of Levee batters (51,000m2)
- Multi-cell culverts supply and installation including inlet and outlet rock protection
- Topsoil placement (200,000m3)
- Unbound pavement placement and compaction (50,000 tonne)
- Road side furniture supply and install (including signage, guardrail and guideposts)
This project required complex material management, supervision and staging to ensure project quality requirements were exceeded in order to construct the certified flood levee and road realignment.
The client, along with the certifying engineer, were satisfied that the project was delivered at a high safety and quality standard.
