13 Mile Gully Diversion Project
Middlemount Coal Mine is an open cut coal mine located approximately 270 km west-northwest of Rockhampton and approximately 10 km south west of the mining and rural township of Middlemount.
AE Group were engaged to undertake the construction of the Thirteen Mile Gully diversion, to allow for recovery of resources beneath it.
Along with the diversion of Thirteen Mile Gully, the project comprised other seperable portions including the western levee extension Stage 1 and Stage 2 to provide suitable flood immunity for the future Stage 2 Mine Pits.
The work under the contract comprised the following elements:
- Construction of 3km of gully diversion works (700,000m3)
- Rip Rap Rock protection to Roper Creek outlet (2,500m2)
- Removal of existing Western Levee, which included selective stockpiling of materials for reuse in construction of the western levee stage 2
- Revegetation of Thirteen Mile Gully creek diversion in accordance with Revegetation Plan
- Construction of the 1km western levee extension stage 2, upstream diversion channel, and removal of earthworks plugs at the upstream and downstream ends of the Thirteen Mile Gully diversion.
Strict environmental and cultural heritage guidelines were followed without incident.
The project was successful in all key performance measures of time, quality, safety and budget. The client is extremely pleased with the end result.
