South West Transit Corridor – Package B
AE Group continued their long association working with Leighton Contractors and were engaged to provide construction fleet and equipment for the South West Transit Corridor (Package B).
The corridor was built to allow for the future growth centre of Ripley and continue west to the Cunningham Highway. The corridor included a two lane road and a future dedicated public transport facility.
The project consisted of:
- Construction of approximately 9km of new highway, with bridges and ramps at Springfield and Yamanto
- 2.5 million cubic metres of excavation to embankments, some cuts being up to 25m deep
- 700,000 m3 of unsuitable material were spoiled off site
South West Transit Corridor – Package C
Following the excellent project progress of the South West Transport Corridor – Package B, Leighton Contractors again awarded the bulk earthworks contract for Package C to AE Group.
Works on this section included:
- Construction of 4.5km of two lane road to a 100km/hr standard
- A new roundabout at South Deebing Creek Road
- A two span bridge across Deebing Creek using 12 pre-cast concrete T-girders
- 274,000 m2 of clearing and grubbing
- 500,000 m3 of earthworks
With the in-situ highly dispersive soils and drought conditions at the time meant air quality was a significant issue. This challenge was met by finding several local sources of non-potable water which was used for dust suppression and embankment construction. Early investigation and proving of cut material allowed the use of existing material as special embankment fill. The placement of a plant workshop facility on site minimised down-time of earthmoving plant.
